FML239 – Lyceum 239 with extensive learning of Physics & Mathematics – is a public school founded in 1961 to offer students gifted in technical disciplines better opportunities of learning. The school prepares students grades 8 thru University entrance. To ensure that extensive learning of some fields would not hamper the progress in others, the study program has been carefully tailored and is constantly being upgraded, as a result of which the students of the Lyceum traditionally showing excellent results in All-national and International Olympiads in Math, Physics and Programming, show very impressive results in humanities and perform high overall score at unified all-national tests. FML often houses teacher training conferences, and teachers of FML regularly run “open classes”, sharing their secrets of excellence with their colleagues from other schools.
Since 1975 the school has been residing in the historical building of Annenschule, one of the oldest educational establishments in St. Petersburg, continuing a long-running tradition of quality education.
In 45 years of its existence the school has brought up numerous winners of All-National (263) and International (67) Olympiads in Math, Physics and Programming, Chemistry. More than a half of Russian participants of International Programming Olympiads for college students in the period from 1996 through 2004 are alumni of FML239. American Mathematical Society (AMS) has named FML239 as one of TOP10 quality education schools in CIS. In appreciation of FML achievements in preparing future IT-specialists Microsoft has established regular support for FML. Some extracurricular courses in the school are delivered by university professors. Among the teachers of FML there are honored scientists and teachers awarded for their achievements in the field of school children education.
As a public school, FML complies with the requirements of the Russian Ministry of Education, but the regular curricular has been carefully tailored and substituted by a broad range of enriching activities, which allow the children to use and develop their high potential in very different fields.
Math center Math center can definitely be named the nucleus of FML, as its students make up the FML classes indexed *1. In fact the center is a series of extracurricular math clubs for students grade 5 thru University entrance. Of 100 5-grades the clubs recruit on the basis of a test, 15 to 20 move towards grade 11. Up to 600 problems are discussed year round, and up to 150 more problems are covered at the summer training camp organized in addition to these classes. At the classes the tutor is usually assisted by senior students of the center, graduates of FML, which is very important as it allows to work with every child almost individually. There is no standardized program for the clubs, every tutor develops unique program of his/her own. Overall the work is coordinated by Mr. Rukshin, vice-principal of FML, who has developed this system and contributed significantly to its success. Many consider this a very efficient, useful and relatively inexpensive way to get access to FML. The classes are free, but the summer camp is charged, though only partly, as some expenses are covered by Education Committee and sponsors. Physics and Astronomy center The work of the center is provided, to large extend, by the graduates and students of most prestigious St. Petersburg Universities, allumni of FML and is carried out in several major directions: > Preparing students for regional and all-national Olympiads. Classes are run by FML alumni, participants of all-national and international Olympiads; > Extensive learning of some fields of physics; > Physics Labs aiming to help students carry out scientific research. To share the results students make presentations at “All-school Day of Science”; > Lectures are delivered at the Pulkovo Observatory; this not only broadens students mind, but also offers them a unique opportunity to see the unique Pulkovo mirror-telescope; > Competitions in physics are organized for students of FML and sister schools (see Friends & Partners)
Chemistry center Chemistry center has been functioning at FML since 2004 and has contributed significantly to the performance of the FML students at regional chemistry competition. 5 students of FML have been selected to participate in All-national Olympiad (2005). The classes are not exclusively available to students of FML, but major part of the students are. A wide range of courses covering theoretical foundations and experimental tasks in organic and inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry and biochemistry helps to engage students into the study process, enrich their potential, develop their creative skills and prepare them for city, all-national and world competitions in chemistry. Literary Tuesday “ Literary Tuesday” is one of FML’s oldest traditions, that originated from the school literary club “Scarlet Sails” founded in 1961. Lying far beyond “regular” classes, it makes a good pattern of what is called creative learning. Theater performances students set up on the stage of FML create unique learning environment, and undoubtedly play the crucial role in developing students versatile gifts. They allow students perceive many things at a time: literature, music, drawing and reciting skills of some, supported by technical knowledge of others – are all engaged into the creative process and, hence, developed freely. No wonder students try not to miss the opportunity to participate in putting them on, and enjoy the results of their own work as well as that of their mates. The recently acquired camera helped to create the archive, a series of picture galleries and the whole video clip about the history of this tradition. “Shagi” hiking club Travellers’ club Chess club
Annual teachers New Year performance This is a relatively young tradition started in the end of 2003 by the New Year performance put on by the joint effort of the tutorial staff of FML. The very opportunity of watching their masters on the stage was so much loved by the students, that it was decided to continue and rejoice them.
